Massawa, the Pearl of the Red Sea
Sitting on the shores of the Red Sea, Massawa is one of the oldest port cities in the world and arguably Eritrea's most atmospheric destination. A place where ancient coral stone buildings meet the warm waters of the sea, where Ottoman archways frame views of crumbling palaces, and where the heat hits you like a wall the moment you step off the mountain road from Asmara. Massawa is raw, historic, and completely unforgettable.
History & Architecture
Few cities in Africa carry as many layers of history as Massawa. Phoenicians, Ottomans, Egyptians, Italians and Ethiopians have all left their mark here, and the old town islands of Massawa and Taulud are filled with the architectural remnants of each era. Coral stone mosques, Ottoman palaces, and Italian colonial buildings stand side by side in various states of preservation, giving the city a haunting, time-worn beauty that is unlike anywhere else on the continent.
The city also bears visible scars from Eritrea's war of independence, with several buildings in the old town still riddled with bullet holes and shell damage, left deliberately unrestored as a memorial to what the country endured.
Food & Culture
Massawa's identity is deeply tied to the sea. Fresh fish and seafood are the backbone of the local cuisine here, grilled simply and served with flatbread along the waterfront. The city has a distinctly Arabic and Ottoman flavour to its culture, from the call to prayer echoing across the old town at dusk to the strong spiced coffee served in small cups at local cafés.
