Keren, Eritrea's Market City
Nestled in the highlands of central Eritrea, Keren is the country's second largest city and one of its most rewarding destinations. Surrounded by dramatic rocky hills and blessed with a cooler climate than the coast, it's a city that rewards slow travel and genuine curiosity.
History & Culture
Keren has long been a crossroads of cultures, religions and peoples. Home to a mix of Muslim and Christian communities living side by side, the city carries a long tradition of tolerance and coexistence that is woven into its everyday fabric. Its history is also marked by significant moments in Eritrea's struggle for independence, and the war cemeteries on the outskirts of the city serve as a quiet but powerful reminder of that journey.
The Famous Monday Market
If there is one reason Keren draws travellers from across the country, it is the Monday livestock market. One of the largest and most atmospheric traditional markets in the Horn of Africa, it is a full sensory experience, with camels, goats, cattle and donkeys trading hands as merchants and farmers from across the region converge on the city. Come early, bring a camera, and prepare to be completely absorbed by it.
